How to be an Original

Looking back on the second week of the Early Bird Challenge

Monday August 6:
First day of waking up at 5:30. First thing that I notice that it’s much darker outside when I open the curtains in the living room. Ten minutes later with a nice cup of coffee in my hand, I’m watching the sun paint the sky in beautiful colors. I think it’s been at least 10 years since I last witnessed a sunrise. The colors are definitely different from a sunset, more pinkish. This day starts off with a treat.

Tuesday August 7:
I slept very well. Monday turned out to be a day with low energy levels in the evening. Waking up was very easy again. A vibrating phone under my pillow is much more effective than that loud beeping machine next to my bed. Or is it just that I have to look for the little button to turn it off, instead of that giant Snooze button on the alarm clock? Why do they make that button so large? That doesn’t help for the people that actually need an alarm clock to get up.

Wednesday August 8:
I didn’t want to get out of bed this day. I didn’t sleep very well as my son woke me up several times this night. I got up anyway. It’s a dark and rainy day today. While making coffee I wonder how rising early is going to be in wintertime. I’m sure glad that I started this in the summer. Coffee is my friend this morning.

Thursday August 9:
Another broken night, I’m really being tested on this challenge. Stayed in bed for five minutes after the alarm went off, and got out. I’m determined to let this work and to not let it slip deliberately.

Friday August 10:
Yesterday we hit the sack early, at 22:15. If you would’ve asked me (or anyone that knows me) a couple of months ago, what the chances were of me getting to bed at that time and fall asleep as well, the answer probably would’ve been Zero! I woke up at 4:45, but stayed in bed until 5:30 anyway.

Saturday August 11:
Managed to get up at 5:30, although I really wanted to stay in bed. We had visited friends the night before, where we stayed until midnight. And I had a couple of beers, that I suspect take away the ease of waking up early. Didn’t want to break a perfect score though, so I got up anyway. Gotta love coffee on these mornings.

Sunday August 12:
On the last day of 5:30 I woke up on time as well. The sun is about to rise and it’s a clear sky out here, it looks like it’s going to be a great day.

Onwards with the challenge
Tomorrow my alarm is set for 5:00, and I think I’ll be okay. Going to bed on time is going to be more important, because I do need 6 hours on average. I’ll keep you posted.
